豊穣の秋、前山地域で雑穀の刈り取りが行われました。この地域で５種類の雑穀を無農薬栽培する、「くまさん自然農園」の熊谷良一さんに収穫の様子を見せてもらいました。
In the bountiful autumn, a grain harvest took place in the Maeyama area. We had the opportunity to see the work of Mr. Ryoichi Kumagai of Kumasan Shizen Noen (Kumasan Natural Farm), where five different types of grains are organically cultivated.
アワ。モコモコと実った穂を１本ずつ手で刈り取りします。
ヒエ。栽培ヒエに分類され、田んぼの雑草である野生ヒエとは異なるそうです。
タカキビ。背丈が３ｍ程もあるようです。実は直径３ミリほどの球形でした。
スーパーフードとも言われるアマランサス（宅地脇で撮影）。深紅の花を咲かせます。畑のアマランサスは、刈り取りが終わっていました。雑穀の収穫は手作業が多く、食べられる粒状態にするには、更に乾燥させて殻を取り除く必要があります。大変な時間と労力がかかりますが、熊谷さんたちは、雑穀栽培への手間暇を惜しみません。この根気強さが前山の特色ある農業のひとつに一役買っているのでしょう。
The harvesting of grains is mostly done by hand, requiring the removal of husks after drying to make them edible. It’s a time-consuming and physically demanding work, but Mr. Kumagai spares no effort for the cultivation of whole grains. His persistent personality plays a crucial role in the unique agriculture of the Maeyama area.
